The Hordern, right here at the Entertainment Quarter

The Hordern Pavilion is one of Sydney’s favourite entertainment venues.

The Hordern has hosted performances by Jethro Tull, Frank Zappa, Coldplay, Justin Timberlake, Frank Sinatra, Little Britain, Mardi Gras and boxing – it all happens at the Hordern.

Opened in 1924 as an exhibition hall for the display of futuristic technology – electric lights, wireless receivers and motor cars – millions of people have crossed the Hordern’s threshold since. Whether it was to dance, sing, eat, drink and or to do business, everyone has a story from the Hordern!

This venue started out as an exhibition hall displaying futuristic technology (electric lights), wireless receivers and motor cars. To this day, the Horden has hosted performances from major talent, community events, local and international concerts, dance parties, iconic activations and is home to the Mardi Gras after party.

Complete with its historic charm, impressive domed ceiling, iconic catwalk and extended foyer, Hordern Pavilion is Sydney’s premier music venue. Both large and small artists are thrilled to play here.

And not only that, but Hordern Pavilion is also host to lavish parties, corporate events and more. So, whether you want to go all out for your family reunion or company Christmas party, Hordern Pavilion is a stunning Sydney venue that you can hire for any type of event.

This year marks 100 years since Northern Sydney architecture firm Trenchard Smith & Maisey designed the iconic venue, which officially opened its doors on April 2nd, 1924. The venue was named in honour of the enterprising retail family, Anthony Hordern and Sons, and Sir Samuel Hordern, who was president of the Royal Agricultural Society from 1915 to 1941.

Back then, you’d take a horse and cart or motor car to see the Sydney Royal Easter Show, which was the original purpose for The Hordern as demand grew for a bigger exhibition space in the early 20s.

Pretty quickly though people realised the potential of the space, and the following year the first covered tennis courts in Australia were constructed in the venue.

By the 1950s, rock ‘n’ roll music was on the rise and air travel made Australian tours more tempting for international artists. The Hordern was converted from an exhibition hall to a multi-purpose venue to host bigger music and sporting events, with the addition of a bar and box office. That transformation sparked decades of epic concerts and performances by the biggest names in music, including Frank Sinatra, Dolly Parton, The Jackson Five, Coldplay, Billie Eilish, Nirvana, Queen, Lorde, The Rolling Stones, Dua Lipa, and Elton John.

Over the years, The Hordern became more and more synonymous with major Sydney events – used for film premieres, gala dinners, major boxing matches and the Mardi Gras After Party. It even had a stint as a bulk store for the Australian Army during WWII.

The Hordern Pavilion is one of Sydney’s favourite entertainment venues.

There is always something on at the Hordern, with over 100 gigs and events held under their roof each year!

With a capacity of up to 5,500 people, it perfect for concerts, festivals, corporate events and even sporting events.

So no matter who you are or what you are looking for – the Hordern will have a show for you!
